Olys Crushin’ it for a Better Bassett

Ten Bassett girls were selected to tackle a school problem and solve it. These ten girls (shown below) applied for the Girls Build LA grant and won $2000 to solve their problem. In April, they will submit their work and be eligible for over $10,000 in scholarships.

Mylyna Hy, 12, explained “Girls Build LA is designed to empower and teach girls about how to apply technological skills and social skills to improve their community and school.”

The Bassett team has committed to bring recycling to Bassett through a potential water bottle refill station, a social media campaign that challenges everyone to “crush it”, and educational outreach. One of the many talented speakers at the kick off was Carmelita Jeter, a three time Olympic athlete and gold winner at the World’s Athletic Finals. Her speech was to motivate the girls to continue for their goals and not stop, no matter what obstacle gets in their way.

Mylyna Hy, 12, stated “(Jeter’s) speech motivated me to be confident and strive to major in a computer science…”
