The Lego Batman Movie is a 2017 3D computer-animated superhero action-comedy film created by director Chris McKay. It is a spin-off installment of The Lego Movie (2014) and focuses on DC’s Batman and Robin as well as a few other characters. The movie is based on the relationship between Batman and the main villain, the Joker.

Starting right from the beginning, the movie is filled with jokes and references that both old and young audiences will find humorous. The first and last lines in the movie are jokes that seem to break the fourthwall. The movie does not limit itself to only DC characters. They bring in characters from Harry Potter, Lord of The Rings, King Kong, Godzilla, and references to the British TV show Doctor Who.

The Lego Batman Movie even takes jabs at DC’s own movies, making references to Batman V. Superman and the premise behind Suicide Squad. Along with having references to those movies, Lego Batman makes references at The Dark Knight trilogy that ended in 2012, George Clooney’s Batman, as well as 1960’s Batman portrayed by Adam West.

Plot wise, Lego Batman manages to give an original, unique plot that makes you feel sympathetic towards the lonely Batman whilst also finding his situation humorous. Robin is portrayed as an adorable kid who just wants a dad, and Alfred is the fatherly figure Batman never had. The Joker just wants to be acknowledged by his enemy “Bats” and proceeds to recruit enemies in order for Batman to finally acknowledge he hates him. Their relationship is like a couple in a love spat and it’s played off in a way that makes you find it cute in a non-dating, bromance way
