With a record-breaking score of 90.8 in The Patriot Parade, Bassett took first place in division B.

Graded on music, showmanship, marching, and the drum major’s performance judges noted particularly outstanding showmanship. Since the showmanship score is highly affected by the color guard, much credit goes to their performance which was also their personal best this year.

This score was not just a lucky break; the band also broke the record in their last parade at Temple City. Although there was only a .3 improvement in score, it is apparent the hours of practice are paying off.

“Our director’s firm decisions on having mandatory morning practices ultimately lead to our success,” said four year marcher Ana Perez.

Next year, the band hopes to build on this success and will attempt to take the sweepstakes award. Sweepstakes is given to the band with the highest score in the parade, regardless of division. At the Laguna Beach Parade Bassett fell slightly short and lost to Oaks Middle School, a distinguished marching band.

This idea of achieving sweepstakes may seem too outrageous to some, but from the 60 plus musicians BHS has; only eight are seniors. The rest of the band is eager to start their next season and continue the legacy that is the Bassett Marching Band.
