Are you currently a senior in high school? Have you been slacking off in most of your school work? Are you repeatedly absent and have a dismissive attitude? Have you stopped caring about things related to school? If you answered yes to any of these questions, like me, you may be suffering from a serious case of senioritis.

Senioritis is when high school seniors start to slack off in school. Since they’re already seniors they start to slack off in most things related to school. Part of this also has to do with the fact that since they know they’re so close to being done with school, they just stop caring about everything.

Symptoms of Senioritis

1.Not wanting to wake up in the morning, or snoozing your alarm more than once

2.Not caring if you’re late or miss school

3. Get anxious every time you come back to school from a weekend or break

4.Purposely don’t do your homework

5.Don’t pay attention in class or procrastinate all or most assignments

6.Going only halfway with everything.

I experienced and felt practically all of these symptoms, probably in the third month into senior year. In the beginning it was just procrastinating and not doing some assignments, lying to myself that I would just do it and turn it in later.

Due to my bad habits, I developed a dismissive attitude, and stopped paying attention in class, as if it didn’t matter.

I gained an I don’t care mind set, and applied it to anything relating to school. Blinded by my indifference, my “What am I doing with my life?” realization moment didn’t hit me until my grades dropped, and I questioned if I was even going to be able to walk at graduation. So here it is: How to overcome Senioritis. First of all, stay positive. You can do this. The second you tell yourself that you can’t, you already failed.

Second, focus on your main high school goal, which is ultimately getting good grades, completing your A-G requirements, and GRADUATING. To do this, you have to set your priorities straight. You got invited to the movies at 9pm, but you still haven’t started that project that is due tomorrow? Stay home, and tell your friends “maybe next time.” You can experience most of all those high school moments later, but this is now. Focus on now. You might even have time left to do all the fun stuff, when you’re finished.

Remember, you’re that you’re close to reaching the pot at the end of the rainbow. In a couple of months, you’ll be graduating, and finally getting school over with. Causing yourself stress and frustration, isn’t worth it. Just keep up, do what you have to do, and you’ll be able to pick up that diploma in the summer.
