Bassett’s band club hosted their very first annual talent show, held in the Little Theatre on February 16th. Olympians were encouraged to exhibit their singing, dancing, and other knacks for an opportunity to win a grand prize of $100.
Students auditioned for a slot in the show and most were able to showcase their talents in front of a whole audience. Besides being motivated by the grand prize, it was clear that the contestants wanted to show what they got and were deeply passionate about their performances.
General admission was $3, but the cost was worth the amazing performances presented by our talented Olympians.
Judges of the performances were Bassett High School band director, Manuel Gutierrez, ASB advisor, Larry Andrews, and students coordinators Noah Barkey (12) and Stephanie Lopez (12).
Laughter enveloped the night as Carla Segura, Jose Acosta, and Braulio Medina, seniors, presented the talent show with a host of comedic skits and costumed satire to entertain the audience.
The talent show was organized by the club in order to fundraise a trip to San Francisco. The club especially wanted to point the spotlight on all of the talented students at Bassett and inspire Olys to come out of their shell.
All competitors were astounding, but unfortunately, only one person was able to claim the ultimate prize.
Victoria Sanchez (11) wowed the judges with her rendition of Frankie Valli’s 1967 pop hit, “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You.” Alexus Rodriguez (10) came in second with an enthusiastic and lively choreographed dance to K-pop tune, “Bhoom Bhoom” by Momoland, and Giovanni Toribio (12) performed an improvised surf-rock guitar instrumental for a spot in third place.
The first annual Bassett High School talent show was a success, and the band club hopes that more and more students will show off their talents in the years to come.
