Virtual reality was a really big deal a couple years ago, when the tech was first available to the consumer market. Everyone claimed it was the next big thing—especially for the video game industry. However, fast forward a couple years later and VR hasn’t really taken off and frankly I don’t think it will, at least not in the state it’s in now.
I want to first state that I really like VR and as a fan of technology in general, the potential that VR brings absolutely fascinates me. In fact, people are already finding ways to implement this technology into areas such as education, health care, and so much more and it has the potential to improve those areas.
With that said, the only area VR seems to be having trouble getting into is ironically the video game space. It’s actually rather baffling to me because VR should seemly be perfect for video games. What’s better than just playing a game—of course being in the game you’d think. However, I feel that current VR isn’t as polished as it should be and the numbers agree. This of course leads to the obvious problem: VR is simply not selling well.
Low sales are understandable when you take into consideration the hefty cost . For one, VR headsets generally don’t function as stand-alone products but rather as extensions. For instance, on PS4, you have to already own a $400 console to be able to use the $400 headset, totally to a $800 investment.
Many users have complained that the resolution is generally noticeable low (especially for PS VR due to hardware limitations) and getting motion sickness from extensive usage as well. These issues are probably going to worked out with time but for the time being they are not helping with the problem. Overall, I feel that VR has too many issues and just doesn’t offer enough to justify their generally high price. Others share this opinion as well such as Angel Ortega’s (12) when he states, “I think VR is a fun concept, but I don’t think we’re at a stage technologically where it functions well enough to be worth the price.” Do I think they will get better? Definitely. However, there is a lot of ground to cover before I believe VR is actually practical in gaming.
