Late start is approved state-wide, thanks to Governor Newsome. California teens won’t start school before 8:30 am. The new law requires schools to adjust their schedules by July 2022 or sooner.
The change happened because many teenagers struggle to get up in the morning due to lack of sleep. Seventeen percent of public schools start at 8:30 or later, but studies show teens are less likely to be tardy to class or fall asleep in class if they start school at a later time because they get more sleep and have time to get ready for school.
Research shows that well-rested teens are less likely to be depressed, to abuse drugs, alcohol or to crash their cars while they drive. However, parents may be a little anxious about adjusting to this required late start. Maria Elena Castro (grade)stated, “It would affect me and my mom because my mom starts work earlier than I start school and I have to be at school for a while.”
A study done by the American-Academy of Pediatric Science said teens not getting enough sleep was “an important public health issue that significantly affects the health and safety of students.” Why wouldn’t we do everything in our power to make sure teenagers can come to school ready to learn? People opposed to the time change may claim it’s inconvenient, but is the change harmful to their health? Scientific studies show sleeplessness is affecting teens and can be improved with a simple 30-minute correction.
