Bassett wrestling is coming in hot with a brand new team and coaches this year. The 2019-2020 varsity wrestling team is small but mighty this year as there is only 14 people on the team. Boys and girls have matches and tournaments scheduled and they’re ready to wrestle.

In December, the Bassett Olympians went up against the Baldwin Park Braves and unfortunately didn’t win, but individually the team did amazing. Andres Boch (12), talks about his season this year and how he thinks he’ll do, “This year is all about putting in the hard work and grinding it out on the mat. I’m so excited this year to wrestle and make it to CIF and hopefully masters or state.”

The girls have another promising year this year with Angelica Media (11) already placing 4th at the West Covina Girls Wrestling Tournament in December, “I missed wrestling season so much on our off season and now that it’s back it feels so good getting back into it and getting the feeling of excitement I get when I wrestle. Winning felt so great and whenever the referee put my arm up towards the STATS table and crowd, I felt a sense of pride for my school and sport.”, Media says as she talks about her win and getting back into wrestling.

Head Wrestling Coach Matthew Garcia talks about how this year for the team,  “As a team I believe that we still have a chance to win league. We are facing a lot of challenges with a new team and a low turnout of kids. The wrestlers we do have this year are from some of the hardest working kids I’ve ever coached. The kids that are on the team are dedicated and want to win league and will do anything to make it happen.”

In January, the girls team went to San Dimas Girls Tournament and Bonita Girls Tournament. There were a couple of wins,  but no one placed. The boys team went to the Arroyo Classic and also didn’t place, but did their absolute best.
